NOVA Safety Information

1.0 Introduction

NOVA is a flexible and accessible platform which is designed to be easy to use. However, proper training and supervision is required to ensure safe operation. As with any lab equipment, NOVA and the accompanying materials and modules should be handled with care and you should read this manual carefully before using NOVA.

NOVA is for use as-is. Any modifications to the machine or improper use, including unauthorized repairs, without explicit approval or direction from Voltera, may damage the machine or cause bodily harm and will void your warranty.

In case of emergency or prior to performing any Voltera-directed hardware maintenance, please ensure that the power cable is disconnected from NOVA.

2.0 Markings and warning statements

2.1 Mechanical hazards

Gantry Bridge, Module Hub, and Smart Probe

Keep hands away from NOVA when the system is moving to avoid injury. The gantry, module hub, and Smart Probe create pinch hazards when the system is in motion. Stay clear while the machine is in use.

Precision nozzles are sharp

Precision nozzles can pierce skin. Handle with care when fitting nozzles to the Smart Dispenser and keep hands clear of the machine when the dispenser is in use and the system is in motion.

Eye protection

Wear eye protection if using the Smart Probe module with custom fixturing, printing on 3D structures, or when using mounting accessories. If the Smart Probe stylus contacts a hard surface during travel, it can fracture and create shrapnel.

Hearing protection

NOVA contains vacuum pumps which can be loud at maximum power. Wear hearing protection if the pumps are run above 30% duty cycle for extended periods.

2.2 Hot surfaces

Smart Dispenser heater

The Smart Dispenser contains a 12W heater with a maximum working temperature of 65°C (149°F). If damaged, this temperature can reach 80°C (176°F). Take care when handling a hot dispenser. Allow the Smart Dispenser to cool before handling or servicing.

2.3 Application-specific inks, materials, and cleaning agents

Material safety is the user’s responsibility

Materials supplied by Voltera are intended for use with NOVA when handled according to their SDS. Always review the applicable SDS before use. It is your responsibility to ensure that third-party inks, substrates, and cleaning agents will not cause a hazard on their own or as a result of a reaction with one another or with NOVA.

Protective gloves

Wear protective gloves when handling conductive inks, solvents, or other electronic materials. Consult the SDS before using.

2.4 Electrical connections

Only mount approved modules

Never touch the electrical contact pins while the locking lever on the module hub is engaged. NOVA will only accept Voltera approved modules.

Ensure power adapter is accessible

Ensure the connecting power adapter is easily accessible when using the machine, including the connection to NOVA. Do not place the power adapter in a place that is difficult to reach.

2.5 Two person lift

Heavy equipment

NOVA weighs 35 kg (77 lb.) and should always be lifted by two people. Lift by the base with two hands. Do not lift by the bridge or gantry, as this will affect calibration. Place NOVA carefully to avoid damage.

2.6 Do not disassemble

NOVA is not user-serviceable

NOVA is not user-serviceable. Do not open or disassemble NOVA or any Voltera modules except at the express direction of Voltera. See Section 1.0 for modification and warranty terms.
